JUNE'S NEWSLETTER
Hi everyone here is your monthly newsletter to keep you informed with everything that is going on with Sharp Shooters Pole Dancing School.
What a gorgeous couple of weeks we have been having, doesn’t it just make you want to get fit so you can get your body out. Lots and lots of stuff going on, but firstly I would like to introduce our Pole Party Girl for Shrewsbury – Tracey Brown, she is brilliant fun and will make your parties hilarious and a party to remember.
I would like to thank the Happy Faces team for inviting us to dance with them at Joop, Bangor at the beginning of May and are pleased now that we will be invited always, so the lovely Sam Sinfield will be organising that and also dancing. I would also like to thank Ellie for dancing with me at the Wynnstay, Wrexham’s Street Party on Bank Holiday Monday. It was a lovely day and such a great turn out and as usual fantastic fun. The TV cameras were there so keep your eyes peeled for the Hotel Stephanie show that is on BBC1 for us.
GLASTONBURY 2010 Sharp Shooters will be performing every night in the Snake Pit in the Shangri-La area of the festival. Glastonbury is the largest music and performing arts festival in the world we are very happy to be part of it! Check out the video from last year!!

As you may know Sonia tries to include other Pole Schools in our newsletters so this month she has contacted
Dawn Roberts from Circadian Fitness in Swansea.
Sonia asked Dawn what advice she gave to her students to help them increase their strength for the Pole and here is what she said:
The general rule for this is ‘like for like’. Basically what this means is that you train your body in a way that will enhance the activity you would like to be better at.
For instance, you wouldn’t give a swimmer a training schedule made for a power lifter because their sports make different demands on their bodies. Each of these athletes would require a very different plan to ensure they were training in the correct way to get the most out of their training.
‘Like for like’ means that to get better at doing something you often train in a way that simulates the activity you are aiming to excel at.
A lot of ladies I know will try to become stronger for pole by doing bicep curls. Unfortunately all doing a lot of bicep curls will really do is make you good at doing bicep curls!
Pole uses a great deal of upper body strength. A lot of this strength is used for pulling yourself up the pole. Using the ‘Like for like’ principle we can see that to get strong at pulling yourself up you will need to do just that – pull ups! Pull Ups can be done on the pole if you own one. If not then I recommend getting an Iron Man Gym which fits into doorways, or a simple pull up bar. Many of these bars have different handles to put the emphasis on a different part of the muscle.
Pole Pull Ups
Firmly grasp the pole with both hands at about head height, making sure your arms are bent, then without jumping, pull yourself up the pole. At first you may only lift slightly before having to return down. The main aim is control so aim for slow controlled lift and lower rather than height. Try doing 4 and then swapping your hands over so that the other is higher and try 4 more
The Push/Pull Theory
This theory behind this is that you keep your body balanced by doing a ‘push’ exercise for every ‘pull’ exercise you do, as it helps to keep muscles coordinated and reduces the chance of body imbalance. I have had very good results with this technique.
So, in order to ‘balance’ ourselves after Pull Ups you will need to Push Up.
Taking into account what we are trying to achieve in this program (strength for pole dancing) then you will see that your regular Push Up (Press Up) movement doesn’t get used very often, however, handstands are very often used, and strength to balance the body in this position is used in a variety of different pole tricks and poses - any Split Grip Poses basically utilise this position. So to balance out the Pull Up I would chose Handstand practice and Handstand Push Ups.
Handstands
Always have a friend to spot you for Handstands. Start them against the wall until you are confident with them. It is also a great idea to see if there are any adult gymnastic classes in your area where you can get proper coaching in this as a good instructor is invaluable for checking alignment and letting you know where you are going wrong.
Handstand Push Ups
If it’s good enough for Pantera it’s good enough for me!
Once you are confident with your Handstands very gently try a Push Up in this position. Start with a very small bend to the elbow until you know you can do it, and gradually make them bigger until you are impressing your friends!
So ladies if you live in the Swansea area and are looking to train on the Pole then Dawn is the lady to contact. Here are her details
One last thing, don’t forget There are still a couple of spaces on the Beginners Pole Dancing courses in Bangor and Llandudno starting June 7th so hurry and book.
